F1 News - Dennis Defends Hamilton
04/12/2006
McLaren boss Ron Dennis has spoken out in defence of his decision to sign Lewis Hamilton for next year. Speaking at the Autosport Awards, held in London last night, Dennis was bullish about his new charge.
"I think that the armchair enthusiasts and some others who have been talking recently will be eating their words next year," said Dennis. "Lewis (above) is the future. He has earned his position and will be given every opportunity to blossom in the team."
For his part, Hamilton - who was also at the Awards ceremony - said: "We have four months to prepare. Being team-mate to Fernando will be a challenge, but he will bring a lot to the team and I will learn a lot from him."
F1 testing moves to Jerez in southern Spain for the next couple of weeks, and Dennis believes that reigning World Champion Alonso could yet test for McLaren prior to Christmas.
"Fernando is on vacation at the moment," said Dennis. "He is contracted to Renault until the end of the year and if a solution can be found between them, there is a car available for Fernando to test. If a solution cannot be found, then he'll test early in the New Year."
